What is Excel Services?

Excel Services is a new component of Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007. It allows users to author documents using Excel and publish these in a Document library. Excel Services then takes the workbook created and makes it available to individuals viewing their Intranet or Extranet as a interactive webpage. And the user does not have to have Excel on their machine to view or interact with the information.

How can Excel Services be used?

Excel Services is a robust tool that allows 'power users' and 'business analysts' to publish reports, charts, graphs, and dashboards using Microsoft Excel 2007. The data that is published can reside from any data source which Excel can connect including Microsoft's SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) cubes.

How does the user experience compare to Excel?

Below is an example of a workbook that was published using Excel Services. Try changing filters on the page or collapsing and expanding rows.

Note: We have disabled some features in the spreadsheet for this demo and provided you with an option to open in Excel.  Also, with administrator rights, you can remove this feature for added security.
